I'm Joelle Cathleen, a Virginia-based acrylic painter drawn to quiet tension, strange little moments, and the stories that can exist inside an ordinary scene.
My paintings often begin with something familiar: a room, a figure, a landscape, a moment of waiting, and then shift it slightly. Sometimes it's surreal. Sometimes it's funny. Sometimes it feels a little lonely.
I don't want to tell the viewer exactly what happened before or after the scene. I'd rather leave enough room for someone to bring their own memory, experience, or meaning to it. I anticipate a silent response, one that no one can hear but you.
Today, I paint primarily in acrylic, building narrative scenes that move between realism and subtle surrealism. In my recent work, I'm especially drawn to solitary figures, unexpected details, escape, and the emotional weight of liminal places.
